A discussion about trace flags 845 lead to explain the information about the requirement and necessity in case of 32 bit and 64 bit environments. The Lock Pages in Memory has gained importance since version 2005 due to the fact that 32-bit and 64-bit environments are managed. As you may be aware it was only available in Enterprise and Developer editions, since CU4 for SQL Server 2005 SP3 and CU2 for SQL Server 2008 SP1 it is enabled as a trace flag 845 for Standard Edition environment too. Lock Pages...(... (more)

When you install the SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) to develop and manage the reports efficiently, there are certain default settings that needs to be changed based on the enterprise requirement. For instance when the SSRS is installed then the next step is to configure the report server isntance that can tune the installation to provide additional features or configure the system settings as scalable environment. The error message on subject line is familiar in a distributed environment that results into collation conflict. I had no exception due to the nature of work I handle on day-to-day and within individual clients. The distributed environment means it can be in same location having the dependancy for the application to use a multi-lingual application or servers located in different geographical locations, then collation will give a kick in the process with conflict issues. Also for the previous versions...(... (more)

SQL Server 2008 R2 has opened gates for endless opportunities for Organisations & Developers to take advantage of newest technologies. I'm getting to know these new features such as PowerPivot Features , the technical documentation refers that PowerPivot workbooks are like Excel workbook (.xslx) files that contain large, related datasets that you build in a separate PowerPivot window in Excel, and use with PivotTables and PivotCharts in a worksheet. This add-in can be downloaded from MS download...(read ... (more)

Every once in a while you might get into complexity in managing a process, even though it is a simple one! So this is where a checklist will come handy to ensure you do not commit any 'blunders' on your day-to-day business. You may relate the DBA checklist to Airline pilot's checklist who will always perform the drill without having any miss of list of chores when they fly. For every DBA a checklist to manage the platform is very helpful, I do have a list of points that I form as a checklist whenever...(r... (more)

Server consolidation & virtualization is a hot topic and also it is one of the biggest concerns for many DBAs is scalability/performance when it comes to virtualization. At this point, performance for virtual machines can be close to, if not the same as, many physical server configurations. Just not in case if you have multiple SQL instances, its fuel to problem. Also the DBAs cannot ignore the fact that Virtualization is advantageous for the company and consolidation gets flexibility to manage...(read more) (more)

SQL Server I/O affinity and Snapshot backups - speed up the maintenance activity on your database

Back in SQL Server 2000 version days (I think) SP1 onwards the affinity mask configuration option has been introduced, which refers to IO_affinity_mask_switch using SP_CONFIGURE statement. I/O affinity dedicates special, hidden schedulers to performing core buffer pool I/O and log writer activities. Just a brief background about the affinity mask (from Technet) as follows: Specify which CPUs in a multiprocessor computer are eligible to process SQL Server disk I/O operations. The IO_affinity_mask...(read ... (more)

SQL Server query optimization and keepup of performance is not a black-art, it can be achieved in a fair manner if you treat your queries with plans with a are reused or recompiled plans that can help you design well-performing applications. There are ways to add a plan or data to the SQL Server cache or to remove a plan or data from SQL Server cache, but these techniques are only recommended for testing or troubleshooting purposes. The key point is more you understand about optimal query plans,...(read ... (more)

TSQL script to obtain I/O utilization characteristics of each filegroup and the databases

published 874 days, 8 hours, 51 minutes ago posted by sasa 883 days, 20 hours, 59 minutes ago
Thursday, December 31, 2009 9:35:27 PM GMT Tuesday, December 22, 2009 9:28:10 AM GMT
One of the primary design goals of all database software is to minimize disk I/O because disk reads and writes are among the most resource-intensive operations. SQL Server builds a buffer pool in memory to hold pages read from the database. Much of the code in SQL Server is dedicated to minimizing the number of physical reads and writes between the disk and the buffer pool. On the same line if we talk about I/O, then the primary purpose of a SQL Server database is to store and retrieve data, so intensive... (more)
