The above error is presented on the instance which has got SQL Server 2008 R2 Reporting Services and used Windows Authentication to connect. The newest additon to SQL Server 2008 R2 architecture is Extended Protection authentication , which is a set of enhancements to Windows Authentication. A brief referral on Technet reveals that the main authentication enhancements that are part of extended protection are service binding and channel binding. Channel binding uses a channel binding token (CBT),...(read ... (more)

Display Total on top of Stacked Chart - Some Random Thoughts

It is a normal phenomenon that human beings take most of the simple things for granted. Take this case, one of my blog readers sent me a mail asking how to display the total on top of a stacked chart in SSRS. The first time I read it, I was almost going to blurt - just enable some property to display subtotals. But the more I thought about it, the more elusive the property became and that is when I realized there is no such property. So for the benefit of all, I thought about posting the workaround that ... The MSDN forum has been the inspiration for most of my blogs, but in all those cases, I was sure that I could attain the end result and my blogs were usually a graphical step by step depiction of what needs to be done, so that I could post it as an answer to the question. But this blog is quite different, I almost wrote a no saying that it is not possible. And that was when I decided to give it a try before replying No :) (more)

This is the type of blog posts you write after you spent hours on a stupid issue and you want to remind what’s happened. And may be it will help someone else in the future. Scenario: you have a MOSS 2007 with SSRS 2008 in SharePoint integrated mode. You already installed the Reporting Services Addin for SharePoint 2007, everything is right, you create a report and you can see the report. But, another user, who has the rights to view the report (but that cannot change it) is not able to display the repo... (more)

Last month, I talked about the licensing model for the "Scale Out" Reporting Services model. It is expensive. Well, this month I am building a proof-of-concept for a customer. Luckily, we can use the Developer edition until we go into production. I feel much more comfortable dealing with technical issues versus licensing issues. Let's take a look... (more)

A Wrapper for Running SQL Server 2008 Reporting Services Anonymously

With SQL Server 2008, Microsoft re-architected SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) to no longer have an IIS dependency.  It now relies directly on HTTP.SYS and handles web protocols independently.   This is a good thing, in a lot of respects (see http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb630410.aspx).  But, there is also a down-side for those of us who are used to utilizing the IIS framework for hosting SQL Server reports.  For one t... In this episode, host Kirk Evans talks with Dr. Michael Ludwich, VP of Consulting at Decentrix, where Dr. Ludwich provides a demonstration of the BIAnalytix solution. This quite an interesting demonstration, helping to show the value of BI in a media organization. In Part 1 of this interview, we talked with Wayne Ruting, CEO of Decentrix, about the importance of business intelligence in a Media & Entertainment company. Decentrix has quite a client roster, including some of the largest broadcaste... (more)

A review: "Learning SQL Server 2008 Reporting Services” by Jayaram Krishnaswamy

A review: "Learning SQL Server 2008 Reporting Services” by Jayaram Krishnaswamy A while back I got asked if I’d review this book, but as they could only get me a copy in PDF format, it’s taken a while to get to it. Whilst I like having electronic copies of books, I generally prefer to read them in paper form, and just have the electronic copy for reference. But anyway – this book calls itself “A step-by-step guide to getting the most of Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services 2008”. At 536 pages, I rem... (more)

View Permissions for Reporting Services in SharePoint Integrated Mode

published 409 days, 15 hours, 15 minutes ago posted by sasa 410 days, 20 hours, 56 minutes ago
Monday, July 27, 2009 12:13:38 PM GMT Sunday, July 26, 2009 6:32:55 AM GMT
Setting up security for SSRS in SharePoint integrated mode can be a bit tricky, particularly if you want to set up some of your users to only be able to run reports, but not to be able to modify or change them. If you give the users the standard Contribute permission level in SharePoint, they have the ability to view and execute reports, but they can also delete existing reports or add new ones. If you assign only the Read permission level to the users, they won't even be able to see the reports in the d... (more)

Syntax highlighting bug in Reporting Services 2008 MDX Query Designer

published 409 days, 15 hours, 15 minutes ago posted by sasa 410 days, 21 hours, 44 minutes ago
Monday, July 27, 2009 12:13:38 PM GMT Sunday, July 26, 2009 5:44:54 AM GMT
Maybe you have noticed that in difference to Reporting Services 2005, the MDX Editor in Reporting Services 2008 has not the syntax highlighting feature enabled, for this reason it’s very painful to edit MDX queries relatively complicated using this editor. Here some screenshots showing the problem in Business Development Studio (BIDS) 2008 – where we design the Reporting Services reports, notice that the BIDS 2005 “Data” tab is not more a tab but a dialog window...
