What am I thinking about the subject line - SSIS & Spatial data, how can both of the features fit in and how to accomplish? Here is the excellent magazine article by fellow MVP MIchael Coles on SQLPASS SQL Server Standard magazine, with a deep-dive information about Spatial features & SSIS way to accomplish the task. See this month's publication....bit of background about SQL Server Standard magazine: The SQL Server Standard is the flagship publication of PASS. It was produced in print from...(read more) (more)

SQL Server SSIS package performance series - resolve the low-memory conditions

published 135 days, 19 hours, 1 minute ago posted by sasa 140 days, 20 hours, 11 minutes ago

SSIS Packages are integral part of database management activities, that all ETL based activities can be managed efficiently. The primary usage for these packages is to manage the movement of data from one place to another. To do that, the package needs to know where it is moving data from and where it is moving data to. Now a days the environment of source & destination server is not limited to a network or between 2 systems, it is diversified into global locations that typically enables Integration...(r... (more)

Working with SSIS Expressions

published 322 days, 11 hours, 44 minutes ago posted by sasa 332 days, 7 hours, 15 minutes ago
Thursday, October 22, 2009 3:37:29 PM GMT Monday, October 12, 2009 8:05:52 PM GMT
In SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) Packages, expressions are everywhere. You may have worked with Expressions in some of the transformation tasks, such as the Derive Column Transformation, but did you know they can also be used to set the properties of many of the tasks and transformations, or even used to modify the values in your SSIS Variables? Let’s look at an example. What if you have to write a lookup query that pulls data from two databases on the same SQL Server but you’re not sure what th... (more)

PowerShell to Validate SAN File Migration

published 366 days, 14 hours, 53 minutes ago posted by sasa 373 days, 12 hours, 36 minutes ago
Tuesday, September 08, 2009 12:27:56 PM GMT Tuesday, September 01, 2009 2:45:02 PM GMT
This post is a bit off topic for SQL Server proper, but I thought someone out 'oogling teh inter-tubes might find it useful. Our group recently had to perform a large SAN migration both to new equipment and to a new geographic location. We started with a replication method provided by the SAN vendor. I won't mention who, but from where I sit I can't prevent you from guessing :-). We had to move a lot of files; the great majority made the move intact but, perhaps because we are picky, we needed every sing... (more)

SSIS – Unpack a ZIP file with the Script Task

published 371 days, 9 hours, 53 minutes ago posted by sasa 378 days, 6 hours, 50 minutes ago
Thursday, September 03, 2009 5:28:42 PM GMT Thursday, August 27, 2009 8:31:09 PM GMT
A while ago I needed to unpack a couple of zip files from SSIS. There is no Microsoft SSIS task that contains this functionality so I searched the Internet. It seems that there are quite some third party tools that offer this functionally. It's also possible to download custom SSIS tasks. I personally always try to avoid third party tools and custom tasks so I searched on. It seemed there is a way to unzip files from SSIS with the Script Task. With some Visual Basic code using the Visual J# Library you ... (more)

Do maintenance plans require SSIS?

published 373 days, 12 hours, 43 minutes ago posted by sasa 379 days, 9 hours, 56 minutes ago
Tuesday, September 01, 2009 2:38:14 PM GMT Wednesday, August 26, 2009 5:25:03 PM GMT
To many, this is a non-issue, since SSIS is installed anyhow. But not everyody installs SSIS. I for instance prefer to keep my production systems as clean as possible and only have what I really need (a principle which is harder and harder to live after as years go by...). Also, not all Editions of SQL Server comes with SSIS. I did a test some months ago for SQL Server 2005 with a recent sp and also on SQL Server 2008. SQL Server 2008 did require SSIS (I tested both without and with SSIS installed), wh... (more)

Getting Started with Variables in SSIS

published 375 days, 3 hours, 2 minutes ago posted by sasa 380 days, 5 hours, 20 minutes ago
Monday, August 31, 2009 12:19:40 AM GMT Tuesday, August 25, 2009 10:01:06 PM GMT
I recently had to create an SSIS package that used variables to pass data between procs, and I thought it would make a good topic for a blog post. There are many scenarios as to the how and why to use variables in SSIS, but we’re going to keep it pretty simple. Let’s assume we have some need to retrieve data from Proc A, pass it to Proc B, and store the results in Table C. First, let’s set up our environment:US... (more)

Watch out when migrating DTS to SQL Server 2008

published 380 days, 14 hours, 2 minutes ago posted by sasa 386 days, 7 hours, 27 minutes ago
Tuesday, August 25, 2009 1:19:45 PM GMT Wednesday, August 19, 2009 7:54:42 PM GMT
During the Beta program of Yukon way back in 2005, Microsoft let us know that the new DTS (soon to be renamed to SSIS) would not be able to translate 100% of the DTS 2000 scripting code we had been working on for the previous 5 years (or longer). Well, there are still many customers working on that migration. Maybe it's easier to go straight to 2008? (more)

Editing Configuration files : SSIS Nugget

Monday, August 10, 2009 2:33:32 PM GMT Wednesday, August 05, 2009 9:24:33 PM GMT
Its been a long-g-g-g-g time since I did a SSIS-related post so here’s a little ditty that I picked up while reviewing some internal stuff today. Editing SSIS configuration (i.e. .dtsConfig) files isn’t particularly easy. Most people I see who try to do this use a traditional text editor like Notepad but that isn’t a great experience because the contents don’t look particularly friendly when you open them up. Observe: Instead you may wish to use Visual Studio which, if you’re messing about with SSIS ... (more)

Media Business Intelligence - Decentrix and BIAnalytix - Part 2

In this episode, host Kirk Evans talks with Dr. Michael Ludwich, VP of Consulting at Decentrix, where Dr. Ludwich provides a demonstration of the BIAnalytix solution. This quite an interesting demonstration, helping to show the value of BI in a media organization. In Part 1 of this interview, we talked with Wayne Ruting, CEO of Decentrix, about the importance of business intelligence in a Media & Entertainment company. Decentrix has quite a client roster, including some of the largest broadcaste... (more)

Split Content of a Table Evenly on Files with Same Number of Rows

Monday, July 27, 2009 12:13:38 PM GMT Sunday, July 26, 2009 5:04:25 PM GMT
This is the second part of series of 2 posts dealing with data export to flat files. In the first part I showed an approach to solve this situation: How could the content of a source table be split evenly on a given number of files? In this post, I will show how you could follow a similar approach when trying to split the content of a table into a number of files, but where each file has to have the same number of rows. This is actually a real problem someone posted in the SSIS forum: I have this tabl... (more)

SSIS Accelerator Series: Working with SSIS Expressions

Whether you’ve been involved with SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) for years or are just learning SSIS, you’ve probably found the learning curve of the SSIS expression language quite challenging. The expression language is a core component of SSIS that helps users make any component in an SSIS packages dynamic and also helps the data flow make workflow decisions. This whitepaper walks you through a crash course in the SSIS expression language across all components of SSIS. After you complete this w... (more)
