Static Named Sets v/s Dynamic Named Sets - Some Random Thoughts

Many times, it can happen that we end up writing very complex MDX expressions revolving sets. To simplify such expressions or to improve the performance of some queries, we can extract the definitions of some sets into a separate named set expression which are called named sets. A named set can be created either using a CREATE SET statement or a WITH SET statement (For syntax, refer Building Named Sets in MDX). In SQL Server 2005, there was only the Static named sets feature but in SQL Server 2008, both ... (more)

SQL Server SSIS package performance series - resolve the low-memory conditions

published 135 days, 20 hours, 30 minutes ago posted by sasa 140 days, 21 hours, 39 minutes ago

SSIS Packages are integral part of database management activities, that all ETL based activities can be managed efficiently. The primary usage for these packages is to manage the movement of data from one place to another. To do that, the package needs to know where it is moving data from and where it is moving data to. Now a days the environment of source & destination server is not limited to a network or between 2 systems, it is diversified into global locations that typically enables Integration...(r... (more)

The cost of SSAS metadata management

This post will explain how we found ourselves in a situation where when processing a partition the metadata checks took 50 times longer than the actual partition and how to identify what time penalty you are incurring for the metadata checks. The system i was investigating had around 80 cubes with around 100 partitions per cube all hosted in one database and we would add 1 partition per cube per day. The partitions in each cube were small but were taking far to long to process and as each da... (more)

Today is July 28th 2009 and I am writing this small post to share my understanding on Gemini and Business Intelligence arena and specifically around Analysis Service. Talk about data in Microsoft and the very first thing that comes in mind is SQL Server. Microsoft hardly released SQL 2008 and we are looking forward for next version of SQL Server. That is very ambitious. When it comes to Business Intelligence problem, things like Reporting, Analysis, data-mining come... (more)

In this episode, host Kirk Evans talks with Dr. Michael Ludwich, VP of Consulting at Decentrix, where Dr. Ludwich provides a demonstration of the BIAnalytix solution. This quite an interesting demonstration, helping to show the value of BI in a media organization. In Part 1 of this interview, we talked with Wayne Ruting, CEO of Decentrix, about the importance of business intelligence in a Media & Entertainment company. Decentrix has quite a client roster, including some of the largest broadcaste... (more)

SSAS: Creating a Rowset action with the ExecuteSQL .Net stored procedure

published 410 days, 13 hours, 19 minutes ago posted by sasa 410 days, 22 hours, 37 minutes ago
Sunday, July 26, 2009 3:30:35 PM GMT Sunday, July 26, 2009 6:12:47 AM GMT
A few weeks ago I did a post introduced the ExecuteSQL .net stored procedure for SSAS. Chris Webb asked if this function can be called from Excel 2007 when it is set this up as a rowset action and I figured that this would make a good topic for a blog post. So the following screen shots show how you would go about setting up such an action. As a quick example I cheated a bit and set up an Rowset action that calls the sp_who2 system stored procedure. This way I did not have a depedancy on any particular d... (more)

I’m pleased to announce that, after a lot of effort and late nights, the book that Marco Russo, Alberto Ferrari and I have been working on has finally been published! It’s called “Expert Cube Development with Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Analysis Services” and, basically, it’s a book about building cubes with Analysis Services 2008. So no surprises there then… Why should you buy this book? There are a lot of other, rea... (more)
