The above error is presented on the instance which has got SQL Server 2008 R2 Reporting Services and used Windows Authentication to connect. The newest additon to SQL Server 2008 R2 architecture is Extended Protection authentication , which is a set of enhancements to Windows Authentication. A brief referral on Technet reveals that the main authentication enhancements that are part of extended protection are service binding and channel binding. Channel binding uses a channel binding token (CBT),...(read ... (more)

When you are dealing with SQL Server performance issues, not every issue can be classified as a problem for SQL Server. There are common characteristics within the issues, such as: Ad-hoc query execution typical taking longer time. Intermittent High CPU. Blocking irrespective of slow performance. Few times a memory pressure related errors on error log. So how can you help the SQL Server to fine tune the query performance using the internal optimizer techniques, which is called caching mechanisms....(read... (more)

Yesterday I wrote a fairly long blog post which started to delve into some of the questions addressed by data infrastructure architecture.  After writing more than 2000 words I decided it was time to give you all a break and for me to have some time away from the keyboard. So here’s the second instalment in which I’ll outline the remaining concerns for the data infrastructure components of data architecture.Data platform performance management One of the key success factors for a stable DBMS is that it... Over the last few weeks I’ve been working with the PASS organization to start up a SQL Server Data Architecture Virtual Chapter (or “DArcVC” as it is starting to be known).  Data Architecture has basically been my job for the last 12 years.  I may have been paid as a DBA, or SQL developer, or BI consultant, or Microsoft Application Solutions consultant, but at the end of the day, what I’ve DONE in all of those roles has really revolved around data architecture. For those of you not familiar with what da... (more)

I was at a user group meeting tonight where a couple of developers were presenting on Entity Spaces.  It was interesting to see the tool in action, but I can’t help but feel a little cautious about the kind of strong typing that’s going on in the myriad of class files that are getting built by the code generation framework.  To me, it seems risky from a complexity perspective.  In my opinion, a good ORM should be able to abstract the schema from the object-level implementation and provide a software-fa... A question popped up on StackOverflow today, asking how to pass a TABLE variable into a dynamic SQL statement in SQL Server 2008. I've previously blogged about table-valued parameters, comparing the approach of passing in a TABLE of values to a stored procedure to the techniques you'd have had to use in earlier versions of SQL Server (e.g. CSV or XML), but this specific question is worth a quick follow-up. SQL Server do not use PROFILER, use Server side trace to upload to table!

As a followup questions from the post SQL Server Profiler: System is low on disk space on drive 'C'? here I had a feedback of how to save the server-side trace to a table? Well there is no direct path to do so, rather a roundabout method of once you have collected the trace using server-side method, open up the collect trace file in Profiler and click on File --> Save As --> Trace Table (see below): The reason it was disabled that I was already performing the Save-To-Table operation, as you...(read more) (more)

TSQL: How to find a frequently executed TSQL statements that causes blocking issues?

If you know about SP_WHO2 (undocumented) (DBA savior) statement from SQL Server 7/2000 days you need no introduction to find what SPID is blocking and which is getting blocked. Stored procedure hangs, how to tell which statement is currently running?

It is a common question that a particular stored procedure is executing for a long time and sometimes looks like it is hanging for longer time. This will cause if you have a trigger looping for the stored procedure actions and using following TSQL you can find which statement is current running or rather you are assuming it is hanging for long time: -- For the best results see the results to Text (CTRL +T before execution) DECLARE @Handle binary(20), @start int, @end int, @SPID int SET @SPID = spid...(re... First one was, what is easy way to determine which version (service pack release) of SQL Server is running :As 2000 version is still operational (most of the places) I would say run the following TSQL against the registered SQL instances on your network: SELECT SERVERPROPERTY('productversion'), SERVERPROPERTY ('productlevel'),....
