When you need to upgrade your knowledge then training is required, at the same time certifications will help you to keep up on what you have learned! How to get the most out of 96 cores

Henk van der Valk is a consultant for Unisys. If you've never heard of him then he is one of the guys that worked on the ETL world record for loading a database last year. This was done with 64 cores. Now with support for 256 cores, Henk got his hands on a 96 core server and showed you what you could achieve with such a server. Have a look at this video to see what Henk could come up with http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2qjrq8kpZUs If you are really interested in SQL Server performance t... (more)

More testing of Unicode Compression in SQL Server 2008 R2

published 285 days, 4 hours, 36 minutes ago posted by sasa 294 days, 22 hours, 2 minutes ago
Monday, October 19, 2009 3:22:40 PM GMT Friday, October 09, 2009 9:56:42 PM GMT
Background Several weeks ago, I ran some tests on the new implementation of Unicode Compression in SQL Server 2008 R2 - both space-related and performance-related.  Of course it was pointed out that my performance tests were somewhat flawed, because I was using data from a very wide and atypical variety of characters sets.  I also didn't like that I was comparing too many different things in the same pass.  So, I thought I would run one more battery of tests, and right a couple of wrongs. So this time ... (more)

SQL Server 2008 R2 bumps the database version

published 334 days, 19 hours, 39 minutes ago posted by sasa 339 days, 22 hours, 24 minutes ago
Monday, August 31, 2009 12:19:40 AM GMT Tuesday, August 25, 2009 9:35:07 PM GMT
The first public CTP of 2008 R2 was just released (see http://www.microsoft.com/sqlserver/2008/en/us/R2.aspx) and many people are rushing to try it out. One word of caution: any database attached to a 2008 R2 server will have the database physical version number increased to 660. The database version number for 2008 RTM and SP1 is 655. This means that you won't be able to take that 2008 R2 database and attach it back (or backup/restore it back) to 2008 RTM or SP1. (more)

Peeking under the hood : what bits have changed in SQL Server 2008 R2?

Monday, August 31, 2009 12:19:40 AM GMT Monday, August 24, 2009 5:35:25 PM GMT
We know what new features are available in SQL Server 2008 R2: data-tier applications (still with that unfortunate and poorly-chosen acronym, DAC), control point explorer, dashboard viewpoints, report builder 3.0, Unicode compression, StreamInsight, yada yada.  To me, at this early point in the release cycle, these features are, well, boring -- mostly because they are not yet fully implemented yet, or in a few cases, because I just haven't had the time to dig into them yet.  I do plan on doing some furth...
