Database Mirroring setup is quite easy between the SQL Server instances when you don't have any pre-configured setup on network or service accounts. But there are certain pre-requisites that you need to be sure about database mirroring setup and resolve future problems, though most of these are documented in Books Online and I see many times people raising them out on forums. You must use same version of SQL Server between the mirroring partners, including the witness server; Also the edition of...(read ... (more)

From SQL Server 2005 version onwards database mirroring has been a good resource to provide High Availablity for the systems without having special hardware requirement. While I was assisting at the SME lounge within Database Platform area in Tech-Ed North America conference, I had few interesting questions from the users asking about various methods to monitor database mirroring environment. Database Mirroring Monitor is the tool which is a first hand resource to see what is happening within the...(read... (more)

SQL Server detected a logical consistency-based I/O error: Error 824, take help of trace flags and event notifications

published 89 days, 11 hours, 8 minutes ago posted by sasa 98 days, 11 hours, 43 minutes ago

This is a every DBA's nightmare to see if they have been alerted, yet another IO related post I would like to talk on explanation & resolution. Error 824 error indicates that a logical consistency error was detected during a read. A logical consistency error is a clear indication of actual damage and frequently indicates data corruption caused by a faulty I/O subsystem component. This is a pure indication about the hardware inconsistency within the environment with a serious I/O subsystem stability...(re... (more)

SQL Server I/O affinity and Snapshot backups - speed up the maintenance activity on your database

published 92 days, 11 hours, 23 minutes ago posted by sasa 99 days, 12 hours, 48 minutes ago

Back in SQL Server 2000 version days (I think) SP1 onwards the affinity mask configuration option has been introduced, which refers to IO_affinity_mask_switch using SP_CONFIGURE statement. I/O affinity dedicates special, hidden schedulers to performing core buffer pool I/O and log writer activities. Just a brief background about the affinity mask (from Technet) as follows: Specify which CPUs in a multiprocessor computer are eligible to process SQL Server disk I/O operations. The IO_affinity_mask...(read ... (more)

SQL Server Management Data Warehouse - quick tour on setting health monitoring policies

published 106 days, 12 hours, 28 minutes ago posted by sasa 116 days, 9 hours, 53 minutes ago

Profiler, Perfmon, DMVs & scripts are legendary tools for a DBA to monitor the SQL arena. In line with these tools SQL Server 2008 throws a powerful stream with policy based management (PBM) framework & management data warehouse (MDW) methods, which is a relational database that contains the data that is collected from a server that is a data collection target. This data is used to generate the reports for the System Data collection sets, and can also be used to create custom reports. All...(read more) (more)

How to troubleshoot database corruption errors and System Center…

Here is the great post from Bob Ward on how best you can understand and troubleshoot the error messages & warnings that will occur within your SQL estate along with Systems Center monitoirng tool. Just a note from that blog: .... This team approached myself and others in CSS and asked us to review what “database corruption” errors were being alerted as part of the management pack and whether the advice given matched that of CSS. What we found was let’s say “room for improvement”. A colleague...(read more) (more)

SQL Server - SSIS package transformation performance issues, follow up

To followup from The buffer manager failed a memory allocation call for 20485670 bytes, but was unable to swap out any buffers to relieve memory pressure blog post, here are few findings that I would like to share. When you see that SQL Server instance throws the error as per above blog post, the amount of memory that can trigger this issue varies for different computers. If the package is really handling huge number of rows such as millions of rows during import/export operations, then allocate...(read ... (more)

SQL Server - when to use stored procedures, a big question and think about plan cache?

published 175 days, 19 hours, 38 minutes ago posted by sasa 185 days, 3 hours, 23 minutes ago
Saturday, February 06, 2010 12:20:08 AM GMT Wednesday, January 27, 2010 4:35:07 PM GMT
Every now and then I see this big question from SQL Server users that when to use a stored procedure? Well there is a second part to this question as well, think about caching of such stored procedures There is no such database management software that can guarentee you flawless query execution over a period of time. Performance problems caused by misuse or mismanagement of plan cache, or inappropriate recompilation, can manifest themselves as simply a decrease in throughput or an increase in query...(re... How fast you can obtain information about missing indexes? Its easy and quick!

published 241 days, 19 minutes ago posted by sasa 250 days, 8 hours, 41 minutes ago
Wednesday, December 02, 2009 7:39:50 PM GMT Monday, November 23, 2009 11:17:23 AM GMT
On the subject line the process to find the answer is not a short one! By design SQL Server engine takes care when the query optimizer generates a query plan, it analyzes what are the best indexes for a particular filter condition. If the best indexes do not exist, the query optimizer generates a suboptimal query plan, but still stores information about these indexes. The missing indexes feature from 2008 version (in specific) enables you to access information about these indexes so you can decide...(rea... (more)

SQL Server database design goals: Memory, Disk and I/O - maximize the scalability with monitoring

published 306 days, 6 hours, 1 minute ago posted by sasa 308 days, 21 hours, 51 minutes ago
Monday, September 28, 2009 1:57:32 PM GMT Friday, September 25, 2009 10:07:43 PM GMT
Do you consider the I/O whenever a database design project is assigned? It is one of the primary design goals of all database software is to minimize disk I/O because disk reads and writes are among the most resource-intensive operations. Over the time it may be one of the criteria that extensive usage of data and defautl behaviour on SQL Server builds a buffer pool in memory to hold pages read from the database. While queries are getting designed the code must be optimized and dedicated to minimizing...... (more)

SQL Server TEMPDB - A key factor in monitoring and keeping up the performance!

published 364 days, 3 hours, 28 minutes ago posted by sasa 368 days, 5 hours, 30 minutes ago
Saturday, August 01, 2009 4:30:06 PM GMT Tuesday, July 28, 2009 2:28:28 PM GMT
You may think on the subject line why TEMPDB is a key factor, a simple term is the size and physical placement of the tempdb database can affect the performance of a system. Even a simple query requires the access/process to TEMPDB, which is a part of the system-processing load may be taken up with autogrowing tempdb to the size required to support the workload every time you restart the instance of SQL Server. So if the SQL Server instance TEMPD is sprea... (more)
