SQL Server 2008 R2 has opened gates for endless opportunities for Organisations & Developers to take advantage of newest technologies. I'm getting to know these new features such as PowerPivot Features , the technical documentation refers that PowerPivot workbooks are like Excel workbook (.xslx) files that contain large, related datasets that you build in a separate PowerPivot window in Excel, and use with PivotTables and PivotCharts in a worksheet. This add-in can be downloaded from MS download...(read ... (more)

Here is a setup based question raised in my recent SASSUG usergroup meeting when specifying about slipstream installation during the installation of SQL Server 2008 R2. Once you click on Setup application and pass through the screens with default & input values until the point you reach SQL Server 2008 R2 setup - Setup Role screen. You will be presented with 3 options (see screenshot below): SQL Server Feature Installation - where you pick and choose to install SQL Server Database Engine services...(read... (more)

A bit of background on the installation setup of SQL Server 2008 (SP1) release onwards, that you need slipstream the installation. This is nothing but you could just install the SQL 2008 + Service Pack release as one time, which is a time-saving mechanism. Peter Saddow from SQL Server development team has shown example from the blog about how it looks when you install (see below): Coming back to the subject line I was presented with the error when trying to perform a slipstream installation of SQL...(rea... There is a myth (rather a wrong impression) in database world that SQL Server setup is pretty easy, what you do is insert setup-media into drive and click next....next.....next, well it is not!!! Pause the passive node to apply SQL2005 Service Pack or hotfix

With SQL Server 2005, Microsoft tried to be helpful in enabling its installer to apply the service pack or hotfix automatically on the passive node(s) in a cluster. In my own experience, this has not worked out too well. Very often, when the installer flagged the upgrade status of the service pack ot the hotfix as failure next to Database Service, the information I found in the log file was that attempt to patch the passive node had failed. You could scour the log files, google the internet, and/or open... (more)

Another option is to use a tool like regmon while doing the config on a reference machine, sniff the registry modifications and then shoot these out to the client machines. This might be overkill, though. Yet another option is to use the... (more)
