Well, its time now again for all DBAs and System Administrators out there to do some real-world testing on their SQL Server 2008 instance platform, service pack 3 for SQL Server 2008 is released now. If you are already testing the CTP version then its not a big issue to perform the test and upgrade the existing instances of 2008 version. SQL Server 2008 onwards the setup process has been so easy and straight-forward to follow, the installation part was easy and I hit the road-block when the system database were moved from the original location. The installtion will go thru the steps such as: review installation requirements, system configuration checks, and security considerations for a SQL Server installation. SQL Server Cluster: There was an error setting private property 'RequireKerberos' to value '1' for resource 'SQL Network Name'. Error: Value does not fall within the expected range
For a minute I thought the error is related to network as it refers 'RequireKerberos' and 'SQL Network name', on top of that this is a SQL Server 2008 Failover clustering environment. Both of these terms are registry based values that are used for kerberos authentication (if not available) then a network name resource is identified for connection. This morning when I tried to connect to my local SQL Server 2008 R2 instance, it was failing constantly with the error on subject line when I'm trying to START the MSSQLServer service. I have around 4 SQL Server service running on this laptop and checked that all the other SQL instance are also stopped including this SQL2k8R2 instance. Pause the passive node to apply SQL2005 Service Pack or hotfix
With SQL Server 2005, Microsoft tried to be helpful in enabling its installer to apply the service pack or hotfix automatically on the passive node(s) in a cluster. In my own experience, this has not worked out too well. Very often, when the installer flagged the upgrade status of the service pack ot the hotfix as failure next to Database Service, the information I found in the log file was that attempt to patch the passive node had failed. Say you want to change the preferred netlib connection order. Or add a server alias. You can do this using the "SQL Server Configuration Manager" program. But installing this on each client machine where you want to do the modification might not feel that attractive. Another option is to use a tool like regmon while doing the config on a reference machine, sniff the registry modifications and then shoot these out to the client machines.
