What practice do you classify as a best practice? The answer is its not a rocket science, you don't need any specific formula to satisfy the need! Ok what if a tool can follow those common best practices & perform an alerting mechanism that can help DBAs to keep the data platform secure & safe according to industry best practices. Not only that even DBAs need to perform a tweaking practices on SQL Server platform manually to find it as ideal configuration. SQL Server Best Practices Analyzer...(read more) (more)

SQL Server in Virtual platform - keep a close watch on physical server's configuration

published 743 days, 2 hours, 55 minutes ago posted by sasa 752 days, 5 hours, 31 minutes ago
Monday, May 10, 2010 9:21:09 AM GMT Saturday, May 01, 2010 6:45:10 AM GMT
Server consolidation & virtualization is a hot topic and also it is one of the biggest concerns for many DBAs is scalability/performance when it comes to virtualization. At this point, performance for virtual machines can be close to, if not the same as, many physical server configurations. Just not in case if you have multiple SQL instances, its fuel to problem. Also the DBAs cannot ignore the fact that Virtualization is advantageous for the company and consolidation gets flexibility to manage...(read more) (more)

SQL Server detected a logical consistency-based I/O error: Error 824, take help of trace flags and event notifications

published 750 days, 3 hours, 26 minutes ago posted by sasa 759 days, 4 hours ago
Monday, May 03, 2010 8:50:02 AM GMT Saturday, April 24, 2010 8:15:43 AM GMT
This is a every DBA's nightmare to see if they have been alerted, yet another IO related post I would like to talk on explanation & resolution. Error 824 error indicates that a logical consistency error was detected during a read. A logical consistency error is a clear indication of actual damage and frequently indicates data corruption caused by a faulty I/O subsystem component. This is a pure indication about the hardware inconsistency within the environment with a serious I/O subsystem stability...(re... (more)

SQL Server Management Data Warehouse - quick tour on setting health monitoring policies

published 767 days, 4 hours, 46 minutes ago posted by sasa 777 days, 2 hours, 11 minutes ago

Profiler, Perfmon, DMVs & scripts are legendary tools for a DBA to monitor the SQL arena. In line with these tools SQL Server 2008 throws a powerful stream with policy based management (PBM) framework & management data warehouse (MDW) methods, which is a relational database that contains the data that is collected from a server that is a data collection target. This data is used to generate the reports for the System Data collection sets, and can also be used to create custom reports. All...(read more) (more)

Here is the great post from Bob Ward on how best you can understand and troubleshoot the error messages & warnings that will occur within your SQL estate along with Systems Center monitoirng tool. Just a note from that blog: .... This team approached myself and others in CSS and asked us to review what “database corruption” errors were being alerted as part of the management pack and whether the advice given matched that of CSS. What we found was let’s say “room for improvement”. A colleague...(read more) (more)

About a year and a half ago, I took a position managing the SQL Server and Oracle DBA teams. I find myself gravitating towards Oracle just because there is a lot to learn. So what have I learned? Oracle smashes SQL Server and visa versa. It all depends on your measuring stick. Hypothetically If I had [...] (more)

Wednesday, November 04, 2009 5:31:47 PM GMT Monday, October 26, 2009 3:53:03 AM GMT
As a SQL Server user Object Explorer is one component that you will never miss when you are using SQL Server Management Studio, in specific from version 2005 onwards. As it states this connects to Database Engine instances, Analysis Services, Integration Services, Reporting Services, and SQL Server Compact 3.5. A brief view of all the objects in the server and presents a user interface to manage them. But not many out there knew the capabilities of how best the Object Explorer's can be used and it...(rea... Another exciting news from Scottish Area SQL Server User Group meeting on October 08th 2009 [Thursday] with the topic: SQL Server Performance Analysis Tools and Powershell. The topic itself is very interesting in terms how DBAs will tackle the performance issues and give you a glimpse of tools that are available with SQL Server 2008 where you can perform your own analysis, also a glimpse of Powershell for a DBA. The evening can get you a starter of how it will for upcoming SQLBits V conference ....(read ... (more)

Can you take thoroughness to a fault? There are some things that cannot be taken too far like intelligence. In a business setting, have you ever met someone who was just too smart(competitors do not count)? How about too honest? Too skilled? Too good with customers? I do not think thoroughness fails into this category [...] (more)

Directly Opening a Solution in SQL Server Management Studio

Tuesday, September 08, 2009 12:27:56 PM GMT Monday, August 31, 2009 6:13:13 PM GMT
Directly Opening a Solution in SQL Server Management Studio I use Solutions a lot in SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS), and you should be aware of this simple tip: If you want to open a Solution without having to open SSMS and then jumping through all the menus, just double-click the solution name in the Windows folder. It will automatically open the Solution and SSMS at the same time. This tip, by the way, also works with any .SQL files, unless you've installed another product that has that file ass... (more)

DBA Compliments

“Wow, the application sure is smoking today.” “You know, Bob, I cannot remember the last time SQL was down. You sure are doing a good  job.” “Gee, is the log always that big or are you happy to see me?” Ha, every production DBA knows those compliments NEVER happen. We have a thankless job. No one ever notices until the database is down. Think I am kidding? When was the last time you told your Exchange buddy how solid the mail server has been? Well, I am tal... (more)

Upgrade but Avoid v1.0 Features

Monday, August 10, 2009 2:33:32 PM GMT Wednesday, August 05, 2009 6:53:42 PM GMT
August 5, 2009 · Posted in SQL Server  Holding off on the newest features sounds like a no brainer especially when the next SQL Server release seem a million years away and is BI focused. In the reality, I was partitioning tables the first night we upgraded to SQL Server 2005. I could not replace TEXT with VARCHAR(MAX) fast enough. Some DTS packages got hit with the shamwow and emerged in SSIS. All of these changes broke stuff. None of these were necessary. A straight upgrade of the engine would hav... (more)

Code Collapse and Expand Feature in SQL Server Management Studio 2008

Monday, August 03, 2009 11:51:18 AM GMT Thursday, July 30, 2009 5:47:17 PM GMT
Code Collapse and Expand Feature in SQL Server Management Studio 2008 In SQL Server Management Studio 2008, whenever you have a "block" of code (BEGIN....END, etc) SSMS will put a little plus-sign in the margin and allow you to "collapse" that block of code so you only see the BEGIN, not stuff underneath. If you're working with a really large set of code, that's helpful. But I got an e-mail from a friend that said her SSMS didn't do that. I was kind of surprised, since I never had to do anything to mak... (more)
