SQL Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2008 R2 has opened up new dimension of physical resource usage and limitations. As you may be aware Windows Server 2008 R2 is only available in 64-bit edition, having the features that are related to DB engine are changed in SQL Server 2008 R2. The high specificiation of physical resources you talk that refers to the highest edition of SQL Server which is Enterprise Edition and with R2 it is Data-Center edition.
