Static Named Sets v/s Dynamic Named Sets - Some Random Thoughts

published 55 days, 8 hours, 46 minutes ago posted by jacobsebastianjacobsebastian 64 days, 12 hours, 15 minutes ago

Many times, it can happen that we end up writing very complex MDX expressions revolving sets. To simplify such expressions or to improve the performance of some queries, we can extract the definitions of some sets into a separate named set expression which are called named sets. A named set can be created either using a CREATE SET statement or a WITH SET statement (For syntax, refer Building Named Sets in MDX). In SQL Server 2005, there was only the Static named sets feature but in SQL Server 2008, both ... (more)

SSIS Package Reuse - Dave Ballantyne's Blog

published 66 days, 9 hours, 36 minutes ago posted by jacobsebastianjacobsebastian 72 days, 13 hours, 36 minutes ago

To me, as a professional software developer, SSIS is severely hindered by its lack of the ability to pass variables into a package. It is such an obvious and simple piece of functionality that it seems incredible to believe that, within SSIS as standard, a parent process cannot tell a child how to behave. This is almost akin to not being able to pass parameters into a function. After trying various methods (calling DTSRun , storing the variables in a table, etc.), none of which I was entirely happy with,... (more)

In the previous post we looked in How to Execute SQL Query or Store Procedure from SSIS and successfully created a package which execute SQL Query or Procedure on targeted SQL Server with the help of this. In this post we look in How to Load Data from text Files to SQL Server, in daily life several time we need to load data in SQL Server tables, we can achieve this with the help of SSIS. We look into the detailed process of loading data from text files to SQL Server tables. (more)

Working with SSIS Expressions

published 282 days, 4 hours, 28 minutes ago posted by sasa 291 days, 23 hours, 59 minutes ago

In SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) Packages, expressions are everywhere. You may have worked with Expressions in some of the transformation tasks, such as the Derive Column Transformation, but did you know they can also be used to set the properties of many of the tasks and transformations, or even used to modify the values in your SSIS Variables? Let’s look at an example. What if you have to write a lookup query that pulls data from two databases on the same SQL Server but you’re not sure what th... (more)

Trick Question – Part I

published 326 days, 7 hours, 37 minutes ago posted by sasa 332 days, 3 hours, 36 minutes ago

It seems simple enough, yet there's so little consensus about how to do this basic thing that we grapple with every day. In my work, I have to poke and prod a wide variety of third-party applications, and I can say that there's fairly little consistency -- and, frankly, a pretty low level of quality -- around this issue, if you go shopping to buy software. Everyone is basically doing the same "thing": creating an ob... (more)

SSIS – Unpack a ZIP file with the Script Task

published 331 days, 2 hours, 37 minutes ago posted by sasa 337 days, 23 hours, 34 minutes ago
Thursday, September 03, 2009 5:28:42 PM GMT Thursday, August 27, 2009 8:31:09 PM GMT
A while ago I needed to unpack a couple of zip files from SSIS. There is no Microsoft SSIS task that contains this functionality so I searched the Internet. It seems that there are quite some third party tools that offer this functionally. It's also possible to download custom SSIS tasks. I personally always try to avoid third party tools and custom tasks so I searched on. It seemed there is a way to unzip files from SSIS with the Script Task. With some Visual Basic code using the Visual J# Library you ... (more)

I previously posted about using Project Gemini as a tool for scientific analysis – as a quick way to learn about them and see them in action, take a look at the one minute Gemini videos by Donald Farmer.  One of the latest videos is about using Reports as data sources and highlights the orange button for getting data sets.  This is a perfect way for scientists to publish data and easily make the feeds available for others to consume.  It could even be included in papers to easily enable research reproduc... Most of the people reading this blog have probably also seen demos or at least heard of Gemini and it’s magical powers of solving all BI problems known and unknown. (And you probably want to be looking at it. You can see if you get accepted to the CTP from the instructions here. I understand that you’ll automatically get the preview of Office 2010 if you’re accepted…) From my perspective of implementing the PerformancePoint Planning Excel AddIn, I can say Gemini would have been a huge help. The compress... (more)

Getting Started with Variables in SSIS

published 334 days, 19 hours, 46 minutes ago posted by sasa 339 days, 22 hours, 4 minutes ago
Monday, August 31, 2009 12:19:40 AM GMT Tuesday, August 25, 2009 10:01:06 PM GMT
I recently had to create an SSIS package that used variables to pass data between procs, and I thought it would make a good topic for a blog post. There are many scenarios as to the how and why to use variables in SSIS, but we’re going to keep it pretty simple. Let’s assume we have some need to retrieve data from Proc A, pass it to Proc B, and store the results in Table C. First, let’s set up our environment:US... (more)

Where is the intelligence in Business Intelligence?

published 348 days, 6 hours, 40 minutes ago posted by sasa 354 days, 22 hours, 43 minutes ago
Monday, August 17, 2009 1:25:13 PM GMT Monday, August 10, 2009 9:21:56 PM GMT
Many people believe that if they go ahead and implement a Business Intelligence solution they will suddenly have an intelligent business that will tell them how it is operating and what they need to do. Customers they need contacting will be flagged, orders that are likely to be late are notified so as to keep the customers happy, and the boss is alerted as to the reason profits have fallen from 15% to 10%. Hexagonal Close Packing for your Fact Data

Disclaimer: It's likely you don't really want to do what I am proposing in this post. This is just an esoteric defrag process, which won't really deliver much performance benefit but carries a fair amount of risk. I present it purely as a curiosity. To paraphrase Scott Hanselman, you might just want to run away at this point, as I can only guarantee that this is an idea, not a good idea. Modest fragmentation has a minor effect on most systems, and what follows is definitely overkill. And it might not eve... (more)

Editing Configuration files : SSIS Nugget

published 355 days, 5 hours, 32 minutes ago posted by sasa 359 days, 22 hours, 41 minutes ago
Monday, August 10, 2009 2:33:32 PM GMT Wednesday, August 05, 2009 9:24:33 PM GMT
Its been a long-g-g-g-g time since I did a SSIS-related post so here’s a little ditty that I picked up while reviewing some internal stuff today. Editing SSIS configuration (i.e. .dtsConfig) files isn’t particularly easy. Most people I see who try to do this use a traditional text editor like Notepad but that isn’t a great experience because the contents don’t look particularly friendly when you open them up. Observe: Instead you may wish to use Visual Studio which, if you’re messing about with SSIS ... (more)

SQL With A Plan : Large Scale DW/BI Design Considerations

One of the most challenging aspects of large scale data warehouse development is the sheer immense size.  It’s common to see all sorts of problems once the data warehouse gets larger.  Common problems include performance degradation, out of storage space, long running queries, blocking and failure to keep up with data feeds.   I have compiled a list of tips that help me to manage the size effectively over the years on terabyte DW projects.  I hope they will be beneficial to you as well.   Here we go: ... Whether you’ve been involved with SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) for years or are just learning SSIS, you’ve probably found the learning curve of the SSIS expression language quite challenging. The expression language is a core component of SSIS that helps users make any component in an SSIS packages dynamic and also helps the data flow make workflow decisions. This whitepaper walks you through a crash course in the SSIS expression language across all components of SSIS. After you complete this w... (more)
