Display Total on top of Stacked Chart - Some Random Thoughts

It is a normal phenomenon that human beings take most of the simple things for granted. Take this case, one of my blog readers sent me a mail asking how to display the total on top of a stacked chart in SSRS. The first time I read it, I was almost going to blurt - just enable some property to display subtotals. But the more I thought about it, the more elusive the property became and that is when I realized there is no such property. So for the benefit of all, I thought about posting the workaround that ... Auto-update of parameter datasets in SSRS 2008 - Some Random Thoughts

The times I have spent with SSRS 2008 can be likened to that of a married couple’s life story. The moment I first laid my eyes on her during the Microsoft seminars and community previews, I knew that she was going to be the one. I secretly started collecting details about her, as much as possible and awaited her arrival. Needless to say, I was one of the very first to have the trial version installed and in the dates that followed, I was just astounded at her potential – she seemed so full and promising.... (more)

tags: email subscription, Reporting Services, SSRS, weekday interval One of the most useful features of SQL Server Reporting Services is EMail Subscription. Managers want their critical reports delivered to them via email for one reason: convenience. They want daily reports delivered to them first thing in the morning. Some want the daily frequency for some other reasons. What is common among these guys is that they don’t want to receive these daily reports on the weekend, which makes sense. The Problem:... (more)

SQLBI - Marco Russo : Permissions to display a report in SharePoint Services (SSRS integrated mode)

This is the type of blog posts you write after you spent hours on a stupid issue and you want to remind what’s happened. And may be it will help someone else in the future. Scenario: you have a MOSS 2007 with SSRS 2008 in SharePoint integrated mode. You already installed the Reporting Services Addin for SharePoint 2007, everything is right, you create a report and you can see the report. But, another user, who has the rights to view the report (but that cannot change it) is not able to display the repo... (more)

Who will be the Gemini users?

In these days, I’m starting to use Gemini and I’m discussing about it in dedicated CTP newsgroups. I recently wrote a message that I’d like to share here, but not before some considerations. First of all, like Chris said, Gemini is less than a threat to (present and future) SSAS solutions. Far less than a threat. We already had this thought when Gemini was publicly presented for the first time nine months ago, but now we have some evidence. Gemini feature set is not complete in this first release. The ... A Wrapper for Running SQL Server 2008 Reporting Services Anonymously

With SQL Server 2008, Microsoft re-architected SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) to no longer have an IIS dependency.  It now relies directly on HTTP.SYS and handles web protocols independently.   This is a good thing, in a lot of respects (see http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb630410.aspx).  But, there is also a down-side for those of us who are used to utilizing the IIS framework for hosting SQL Server reports.  For one t... A review: "Learning SQL Server 2008 Reporting Services” by Jayaram Krishnaswamy

A review: "Learning SQL Server 2008 Reporting Services” by Jayaram Krishnaswamy A while back I got asked if I’d review this book, but as they could only get me a copy in PDF format, it’s taken a while to get to it. Whilst I like having electronic copies of books, I generally prefer to read them in paper form, and just have the electronic copy for reference. But anyway – this book calls itself “A step-by-step guide to getting the most of Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services 2008”. At 536 pages, I rem... (more)

Syntax highlighting bug in Reporting Services 2008 MDX Query Designer

published 369 days, 7 hours, 52 minutes ago posted by sasa 370 days, 14 hours, 21 minutes ago
Monday, July 27, 2009 12:13:38 PM GMT Sunday, July 26, 2009 5:44:54 AM GMT
Maybe you have noticed that in difference to Reporting Services 2005, the MDX Editor in Reporting Services 2008 has not the syntax highlighting feature enabled, for this reason it’s very painful to edit MDX queries relatively complicated using this editor. Here some screenshots showing the problem in Business Development Studio (BIDS) 2008 – where we design the Reporting Services reports, notice that the BIDS 2005 “Data” tab is not more a tab but a dialog window...
