Calculating ROI on Performance Tuning - Never Say Never

Wednesday, June 16, 2010 12:01:47 PM GMT Monday, June 07, 2010 5:39:52 AM GMT
Recently on the SSC forums, someone asked about how to measure the money in an actual dollar figure that they have saved the company with their performance tuning. I've often struggled with this myself, and so I started thinking about it a bit deeper. I started to respond in the thread; then decided I was going to be a bit too long winded so I moved it here. The following are some of my thoughts/opinions on the subject. I think everyone will agree that it's probably not worth the time to optimize a ... (more)

Tips and Tricks to prevent SQL Injection in .Net Code - Deepak Palkar's Blog

published 59 days, 9 hours, 6 minutes ago posted by jacobsebastianjacobsebastian 66 days, 14 hours, 57 minutes ago
Wednesday, June 02, 2010 10:59:41 AM GMT Wednesday, May 26, 2010 5:08:53 AM GMT
SQL Injection is an attack in which malicious code is inserted into strings that are later passed to an instance of SQL Server for parsing and execution. This can allow an attacker to steal the data as well as modify and delete it. Conventional security measures like use of SSL and IPSec, do not protect the application from SQL injection attacks. Post Upgrade Experience: SQL 2000 to 2008 - Never Say Never

Monday, May 17, 2010 9:50:33 AM GMT Friday, May 07, 2010 1:05:32 PM GMT
Whew! So I've been super busy the past week and a half upgrading our production server from SQL 2000 to SQL 2008 and haven't had time for any new posts. Finally starting to see everything calm down again though and running smoother than ever before. I had hoped to do a comparison of 2000 and 2008 disk activity pre and post compression, but due to the number of "emergencies" in the week prior to the changeover and the number of times our plans changed with reconfiguring raid arrays etc. I never had an opp... SQL SERVER – Retrieve and Explore Database Backup without Restoring Database – Idera virtual database « Journey to SQL Authority with Pinal Dave

Monday, April 19, 2010 7:44:46 AM GMT Friday, April 09, 2010 9:56:55 AM GMT
I recently downloaded Idera’s SQL virtual database, and tested it. There are a few things about this tool which caught my attention. My Scenario It is quite common in real life that sometimes observing or retrieving older data is necessary; however, it had changed as time passed by. The full database backup was 40 GB in size, and, to restore it on our production server, it usually takes around 16 to 22 minutes, depending on the load server that is usually present. This range in time varies from one ser... (more)

Last week I saw a post on Simon Sabin’s blog about SQL Server service accounts and SPNs and made a comment about the importance of SPNs when renaming a SQL Server or migrating several servers into .. less than several. I felt this an area worth expanding a little more. (more)

Changing primary key index structure | AdaTheDev

published 144 days, 14 hours, 19 minutes ago posted by AdaTheDevAdaTheDev 152 days, 6 hours, 40 minutes ago
Tuesday, March 09, 2010 5:46:46 AM GMT Monday, March 01, 2010 1:25:24 PM GMT
Changing the structure of a primary key constraint index from nonclustered to clustered (or from clustered to nonclustered) is not necessarily as straight forward as it first seems. The process of changing it over, involves the constraint being dropped and then recreated. This could potentially cause a problem if you're making the change on a table whilst there could be activity against it. (more)

Autogenerated SQL constraint names - why to avoid them | AdaTheDev

published 147 days, 14 hours, 33 minutes ago posted by AdaTheDevAdaTheDev 153 days, 21 hours, 4 minutes ago
Saturday, March 06, 2010 5:31:56 AM GMT Saturday, February 27, 2010 11:00:57 PM GMT
Autogenerated constraint names in SQL Server - are they convenient, or are they a hindrance? For me, they are a hindrance. Why should I care that SQL Server autogenerates a constraint name when I don't explicitly specify one? Why does it matter if it names my PRIMARY KEY constraint "PKConstrai3214EC271FCDBCEB", or my DEFAULT constraint "DFConstraintColumnA__21B6055D"? This article explains reasons why you should specify a name yourself for each constraint. (more)

This post is an introduction to metaproblems and discusses a common metaproblem: drama. define a problem as an unsolved issue. It could be minor. Or it could threaten your project, llivelihood, or even your life. Problems share some characteristics: •Problems are not symptoms. •Problems are not effects. •Problems rarely scale. The symptoms of a problem are related to the problem. We usually think of symptoms medically. If you have a common cold you exhibit symptoms. The symptoms indicate you ha... (more)

For those of you who are using partitioning, or who are considering using partitioning, allow me to share some tips with you. Easy Partition Staging Tables Switching partitions (or more specifically, hobts) in and out of a partitioned table requires the use of a staging table. Pause the passive node to apply SQL2005 Service Pack or hotfix

published 285 days, 4 hours, 43 minutes ago posted by sasa 294 days, 23 hours, 49 minutes ago
Monday, October 19, 2009 3:22:40 PM GMT Friday, October 09, 2009 8:16:42 PM GMT
With SQL Server 2005, Microsoft tried to be helpful in enabling its installer to apply the service pack or hotfix automatically on the passive node(s) in a cluster. In my own experience, this has not worked out too well. Very often, when the installer flagged the upgrade status of the service pack ot the hotfix as failure next to Database Service, the information I found in the log file was that attempt to patch the passive node had failed. You could scour the log files, google the internet, and/or open... (more)

Rebuilding Indexes vs. Updating Statistics

Monday, October 19, 2009 3:22:40 PM GMT Friday, October 09, 2009 8:03:20 PM GMT
One of the questions I was asked recently while speaking at user groups, was regarding the order that jobs like rebuilding indexes or updating statistics should be performed as part of the database maintenance activities. Then I started writing this post about this topic on the weekend but was interrupted several times, including one of them to watch the premiere on VH1 of the movie Anvil: The Story of Anvil.   In general, the order should not matter, at least if you carefully consider these importan... Another use for the Default Trace: Mapping Temporary Tables to Sessions

published 296 days, 5 hours, 23 minutes ago posted by sasa 305 days, 6 hours, 33 minutes ago
Thursday, October 08, 2009 2:42:39 PM GMT Tuesday, September 29, 2009 1:32:49 PM GMT
Here’s another use for the information captured by the default trace.  Ever wonder what session created the tables that exist in tempdb?  Well you can find it using the default trace and the sys.objects view in tempdb.  Any time an object is created in a database, EventClass 46 (Object:Created) is captured in the trace output of the DMV.  By scanning the trace files for a matching ObjectID that was created 100 ms before or after the objects create_date with DatabaseID = 2 (tempdb) you can match the objec...
