Buck Woody : The Database Design Process

I need your help. I know how I create databases, and I’ve watched a lot of other data professionals follow their own processes for that, but I want to know how YOU do it.   I’ve written about the process I follow for a complete database design on InformIT (use the "Next" button at the bottom of these to see them all). Beyond starting with the business requirements and REALLY hammering that out, here is the general outline I use:   1.      Pull out the nouns from the business requirements (“Client”, “... (more)

Ozziemedes on SQL Server: A Brief Diversion on Database Design

My promised follow-up on the sys.tables post is still in the skunk works.  I got distracted by an interesting post by Buck Woody of Microsoft over on his Blog on SQLBlog.com.  The questions he posed are as follows: 1. What process do you follow? 2. How important are the business requirements? 3. What tool do you use to create the design, do you need it to diagram, do you even care about diagrams? 4. What’s your biggest pain-point about designing? Not with SQL Server, mind you, just the designing part... (more)

Ozziemedes on SQL Server: Metadata Basics – The Great DBA Koan

So… you just got your new shiny SQL Server DBA Deputy’s badge, and moved your crap over to a new desk, next to the resident SQL Expert in your office, all keen for the Great Imparting Of Wisdom (GIOW), and he’s handed you a diagram full of coloured regions, annotated boxes and connecting lines.  “First things first, get yourself up to speed with the system catalog for SQL Server,” he says, then turns back to his own screen to fix whatever just got broken for the third time today. About now, many young D... (more)

Ozziemedes on SQL Server: Mining Metadata

One thing that I have found especially useful in my career working with databases is keeping up with the structure of metadata available in system databases, and with metadata stored in user database system catalogs. For those of you unfamiliar with the term, metadata is often described as “data about data”.  I prefer a slightly less simplistic explanation: “Metadata describes the format, structure and behaviour of data and code in computer systems.”  The first definition catches situations where metada... I already talked about the Expert Cube Development with Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Analysis Services book I wrote with Chris and Alberto. We found several posts around the blogosphere and I'd like to keep track of them - I'll try to update this post whenever we found new entries. Feel free to add links in the comments. SQL Quiz: My relative path to Geekdom

I got tagged in another SQL Quiz going around, this time by Mr. Denny (Blog/Twitter).  I tried to come up with some kind of witty title for this post and as usual I lacked the ability.  My wife recommended using a story like the guy on The Guardian, Emily Thomas: How does Jake Fischer become a guy who wants to jump out of helicopters? Jake Fischer: I killed a couple guys and had to get out of Dodge. Emily Thomas: You're lying. Jake Fischer: There is that possibility. Emi... (more)

Come to the PASS Summit

"What's the big deal about the PASS Summit, Andy?" Allow me tell my story (again): "Hello. My name is Andy Leonard, and I am an accidental database professional." "Hi Andy." I jumped the fence from applications developer to database person in 2003. I thought I understood databases. I could write queries, design tables, build stored procedures, etc. And then I was standing nearest the server when my team decided to replace the SQL Server person. Bam! Instant SQL Server guru... right? WRONG! Yes, I had... (more)

Move BOL examples please!!

Tuesday, September 08, 2009 12:27:56 PM GMT Wednesday, September 02, 2009 5:30:08 PM GMT
Earlier on today I tweeted the following message: Anyone think #sqlserver BOL should have the examples at the top? That's the only bit people read, right?   In other words, the examples that appear in SQL Server Books Online are the most useful things in there so perhaps they should go at the top of the pages rather than right at the bottom. It was only a throwaway comment but it created, by some distance, more retweets than I’ve ever seen before for anything I’ve said   so that got me thinking t... (more)

I’ve just heard that the first ever Microsoft SQL Server Data Management Conference is being held in London on th.  Although it is not an education-specific event, there is a good agenda with excellent presenters that could be of use to you if you are running complex databases. It’s obviously useful for IT managers, and information managers, database administrators and architects will find real value to add to their knowledge of how t... (more)

I'm honored to serve on the SQL Saturday Advisory Council! I get to serve with Andy Warren, Buck Woody, and Kevin Kline (if there are others, apologies for leaving you out!). Looking at my name on that list of fellow board members reminds me of that old Sesame Street tune "One of these things just doesn't belong here..." :) This is a really cool opportunity to positively impact the SQL Server community, one for which I'm grateful. I'll be attending SQL Saturday #21 in Orlando 17 Oct 2009. I'm looking fo... (more)

Recuitment adverts make me laugh

I do find that recruitment agents often don't appreciate the people they are trying to recruit, they seem to stick all the skills they can in the job. Maybe to try and attract as many people as possible. However I do find that the request for skills in different areas is all too common, and if you find someone that fits surely they're knowledge is going to be thin across all technologies. (more)

SQL Server R2's Killer Feature Donald Farmer and I are headed for a smackdown.  If you don't know who Donald Farmer is, you probably haven't been to any technical conferences where BI was discussed. He's simply one of the finest minds on the topic that there is. Hius demos are flawless, he is engaging, interesting, and an all around bright guy. But this time, he's gone too far. In a recent Facebook Post, Donald had teh unmittigated gall to insinuate that the BI features are the best new thing in SQL ... (more)

This week I came home from work to find a unexpected package waiting for me.  When I opened it, I found a copy of Kevin Kline’s (blog/twitter/website) latest edition of SQL in a Nutshell.  I forget now exactly how the topic came up, but at some point in the past Kevin offered to send me a copy of the book.  I think it started at PASS last year where I mentioned that as a part of my job, I also am the backup to our Oracle DBA, and one of my biggest problems in working with Oracle is that I don’t know the ... DBA Compliments

“Wow, the application sure is smoking today.” “You know, Bob, I cannot remember the last time SQL was down. No one ever notices until the database is down. Think I am kidding? When was the last time you told your Exchange buddy how solid the mail server has been? Well, I am tal... (more)
